Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin porcelain shells that look and feel just like your natural teeth. Typically used to change the appearance of your smile, veneers also protect against further tooth damage and add strength to your teeth. The team may recommend veneers if you have:

  • A cracked tooth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Misshapen teeth
  • A tooth gap
  • Crooked teeth
  • A fractured tooth

When cared for properly, veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, making them the perfect option for patients who want to change their smile without undergoing serious dental work.

How are veneers placed?

To ensure your veneers mold to your teeth perfectly, you will typically need to schedule two appointments with your provider. At the first appointment, they will clean your damaged or discolored tooth and determine the correct shade for your veneer. Next, they will remove a small portion of the enamel to make room for the veneer, so it doesn’t look bulky.

The team will then take impressions of your tooth, which are sent off to the lab for fabrication. While you wait for your new veneer, the Newport Dental team will fit you for a temporary veneer. It takes approximately two weeks for your custom veneers to be created and sent back to the office.

At your second appointment, the temporary veneer is removed. The team will then clean your tooth and pumice it to prepare for your permanent veneer. Once your tooth is fully prepared, your provider uses an adhesive and a special solution to cement the veneer to your tooth, molding it to fit in with the shape and length of the rest of your teeth. Before you leave, the team will light-cure your veneer for about one minute and polish the new restoration.

How do I care for my veneers at home?

You care for veneers just like your natural teeth. In addition to brushing twice a day and flossing regularly, the Newport Dental team recommends fluoride toothpaste for cleaning veneers. It is also wise to limit your intake of food and drinks that cause tooth stains, such as coffee, black tea, red wine, and dark berries. While porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, you may notice discoloration over time.

With the team’s expertise, dental veneers can help you achieve the smile of your dreams. For more information on veneers, call Newport Dental or book an appointment online today.
