One of the first treatments that Dr. Brian Han may recommend once you are diagnosed with periodontal disease is scaling and root planing. This treatment, also known as deep dental cleaning, works to thoroughly cleanse your mouth from bacteria, plaque and other disease-causing factors, eliminating plaque and tartar buildup to kick-start the healing process and help you fight gum disease.
There are two main steps to this treatment:
- Scaling — scaling involves removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth above and below the gum line.
- Root Planing — root planing involves removing bacteria below the gum line and smoothing the roots of the teeth to promote healthy attachments to your jawbone
Antibiotic treatment may also be used during scaling and root planing to produce the best results for your oral health. While this procedure can usually be performed comfortably without an anesthetic, a local anesthetic and sedation options are available if you need them. Most scaling and root planing treatments can be completed in one or two visits to our office.
