If your tooth is decayed, infected or damaged by trauma, our dentist may recommend pulp capping. Pulp capping is an alternative to root canal therapy that allows you to keep the healthy dental pulp in your mouth.
The dental pulp is an incredibly important part of your mouth containing the nerves and blood vessels that keep a tooth alive. When this pulp is exposed to bacteria from your mouth through injury or decay, it can cause the tooth to die. Pulp capping removes this access and helps preserve the healthy pulp in your mouth. There are two types of pulp caps: direct and indirect.
Direct Pulp Caps
Direct pulp caps are recommended when tooth decay or trauma exposes the dental pulp. Special material is used to seal the pulp chamber and prevent any further damage from occurring.
Indirect Pulp Caps
In some cases, the process of removing tooth decay may come close to exposing the dental pulp. Indirect caps seal over the tooth to prevent the pulp from being exposed and protect it from further damage in the future.
